Description:

Having a clean STL file is crucial to a successful slice and eventually a successful print. Depending on the CAD program used to design the 3D model, and also the complexity of the 3D model, some create the STL file cleaner than others. But just to be safe, it is a good rule of thumb to clean up your STL file. This is also a great place to check and make sure that the part is in the printing orientation. You can also check to make sure your CAD program exported it correctly size wise. This software can be used to make sure your STL file is “watertight” for printing correctly as well. This is especially important when designing in CAD programs like SketchUp.

Process:

1) Netfabb Basic can be downloaded here.

--

2) Locations of the button features at the top of the interface:

--

3) Location of the part size is in the bottom right hand corner of the interface:

  • To change units, go into the "Settings" dropdown at the top of the interface and select "Settings". NOTE: when exporting the STL file at the end, the units will need to be in mm for the part to be the correct size. This switch would just be for reference.

--

4) To repair an STL file, first open up the file. It should be highlighted green.

--

5) Click the red "+" or plus sign at the top of the interface

--

6) Click "Automatic Repair"

--

7) Click "Execute"

--

8) Click "Apply" in the bottom right hand corner

--

9) Click "Remove Old Part"

--

10) Use the "Part" dropdown at the top and select "Export Part > As STL"
