Description:

The following is a list of compatible HDR and HD2x material combinations and the uses that would be associated with the combination. Incompatible material combinations are also detailed with the reasons behind the incompatibility. Also, we have listed experimental material combinations that have been printed with limited success. The material settings for these experimental combinations are still in the development stages.

Compatible Combinations:

  • ABS + PLA: PLA is currently our top recommendation for use as a support material with ABS. Using a soluble support material allows the creation of more intricate parts with less effort necessary for support removal and cleanup. It can be dissolved using Instant Power Hair & Grease Drain Opener. For more information about dissolving PLA, refer to the following solution: Dissolving PLA.

  • ABS + ABS: ABS is our go-to recommend material at Airwolf 3D. With good strength and temperature properties, ABS is what is used to make many components on the Airwolf 3D printers. ABS + ABS is used when more than one color in the same print is desired.

    • PLA + PLA: PLA is a great material for large prints as it does not have a very high shrink rate. PLA can produce parts with very smooth surface finishes. PLA + PLA is used when more than one color in the same print is desired.

    • ABS + HIPS: HIPS can also be used as a soluble support material with ABS. It can be dissolved using a chemical called Limonene. Using a soluble support material allows the creation of more intricate parts with less effort necessary for support removal and cleanup. For more information about dissolving HIPS, refer to the following solution: Dissolving HIPS.

    Experimental Combinations:

    • PC-ABS + PLA: This combo is working great with smaller prints, but needs more testing in larger parts.

    • PETG + PLA: This combo is working great with smaller prints, but needs more testing in larger parts.

    • PCTPE + TPU: PCPTE can be run at a lower temperature than most Nylon-based filaments, which gives it the potential for more combinations in the future.

    • PLA + PVA: Using PVA as a support material is a possibility in the future, the current difficulties involve cleanly printing PVA. The water-solubility of PVA is a good characteristic for any potential support material.

    Incompatible Combinations:

    • PET + ABS: Due to rate at which the PET filament cools, this prevents proper adhesion with the ABS material. The PET remains hot while the ABS cools at a much quicker rate.

    • ABS + PVA: PVA is a water soluble material with a very low printing temperature. The higher printing temperature of ABS (and many other materials) would case it to melt the PVA during the print, and likely burn the PVA in the hot end.

    • Polycarbonate + ALL: The printing temperature of polycarbonate is much higher than all other materials the JR2x hot end can print with. The high printing temperature prevents polycarbonate from being able to print with other materials.

    • Nylon: The self lubricating and chemical resistance properties make nylon a very difficult material to print as a dual material combination. Currently, we have not had any success printing various nylons (bridge, 618, 645) together with other filaments in a dual-material print. The exception is PCTPE, which is currently experimental.

    • PC-ABS + HIPS: The printing temperature of PC-ABS is too high for HIPS to print properly, and will likely result in a clogged nozzle.
